Kreis Wesel

The district of Wesel has many places of interest. The Romans founded Xanten, then called "Colonia Ulpia Traiana", on the northern Limesweg ("Limes Road"). Visitors to Archeologisch Park Xanten and the Roman Museum are taken on a voyage of discovery to the period of Roman rule.

During the Prussian period the Hansa town of Wesel, situated between the Rhine and the Lippe, used to be a fortress. The Preußen museum in Wesel is housed in the former granary of the Wesel citadel. The famous "Wesel Donkey" is located near the Berliner Tor. Konrad Duden, who pioneered the German spelling, was born here.

A varied landscape along and with the rivers Rhine, Lippe and Issel. No fewer than three rivers dominate the landscape of the district of Wesel. In addition to fun outings by large Rhine barges, canoe trips, diving and sailing courses are also available. Of course water rats, too, come into their own in the many lakes such as the Nordsee and Südsee in Xanten.

Crossing a magnificent, alternating landscape, the walks and cycle routes in the district offer plenty of sporting activities. Visitors can catch their breath and recharge their batteries in Hohe Mark area of natural beauty, also known as the "green lung" of this area. Cyclists can use a vast cycle track web with nearly 1000 signposted cycle tracks.

In winter approximately 200,000 wild geese stay on the Bislicher Islands near Wesel. From wild geese to Christmas turkeys, there are a lot more culinary delights to be enjoyed. The "regional menus" in restaurants and farm cafés offer connoisseurs quality and choice.

Many of the cultural events are not just a must for day trippers. Examples are the "Fantastival", Dinslaken's open-air festival in the Burgtheater, the "Comedy Arts Festival" in Moers and the Sommerfestspiele in the Archeologisch Park in Xanten.

The district of Wesel on the Lower Rhine comprises 13 towns and municipalities in total.
