Central Limburg? A discovery worth making!
Diverse, water-rich, packed with history, welcoming, breathtakingly
green and an oasis for people seeking tranquillity: that's central
Limburg in a nutshell. A lively region with Roermond, city of the
Maas and the Roer, as its sparkling and versatile centre. Roermond,
voted Best Town Centre of 2009-2010, offers a wide range of shops
and a fascinating, historic town centre with excellent hotels.
Shops are now open seven days a week, not just in the attractive
town centre but also in the Designer Outlet Center and the
Retailpark. But Roermond is also a cultural city featuring pearls
of modern architecture, and of course a culinary city with a varied
selection of restaurants.
Roermond is flanked by the most picturesque villages in green
countryside. With campsites, holiday parks and a wide range of
B&Bs. The region is a dream for walkers and cyclists, with
routes winding through awesome scenery. Experience the expanse of
De Meinweg national park in Roerdalen or visit Maasgouw with its
romantic little town of Thorn and fort Stevensweert, taking you
back in time to the 17th century. Beesel has the only covered
fishing river in Europe, fantastic Maas panoramas and Meerlebroek
nature reserve. In Leudal, castles, chapels and field crosses
remind us of the past. And Echt-Susteren is the gateway to South
Limburg with dreamy villages, alternating with corn fields and
woodland.
The Maasplassen lakes form the heart of Central Limburg. The
three thousand hectares of water with their lovely beaches are
ideal for jaunts by boat or motor yacht. The Maasplassen are also a
great favourite of sailors and surfers. Staying overnight? No
problem. In the many marinas, water sports enthusiasts will find a
hospitable welcome. But the Maasplassen are more than a fabulous
area for water sports. They are also surrounded by wonderful
countryside grazed by Galloway cattle and Konik horses. Here
unusual flowers and plants grow before your eyes and there are
dozens of species of birds. Even the beaver has renewed its
acquaintance with the area. The Maasplassen offer a wonderful
natural environment to enjoy in peace and tranquillity.
